Skoolie Rest Days and a Walkabout: Olympia, WA

Some days are more challenging than others. Last Monday was a tough one for us.

It rained through the night and was forecast to continue through the day. We stayed positive, knowing we only had a few hours of pedaling ahead of us. A couple of days of rest, a shower, and a warm bed were waiting for us.

Cortney and I gave each other our pep talk about taking this project at our own pace and doing it together. The priority is to be smart and safe.

Opting for a more direct route, we bit the bullet and decided to take Highway 101. As loud and unpleasant as it was, we were grateful for the super-wide shoulder.

We made it to town earlier than expected (and sufficiently drenched) and had plenty of time to check in. This “lodging” is unique and we were excited about our stay. It was the perfect opportunity to get some time off the bikes, stay dry, and take care of some freelance projects.

The owners of this Skoolie cleverly converted this 1992 Thomas school bus into a tiny home. It’s pretty amazing and they documented the whole process. Everything about the place is miniature and strategically placed. The stove was a personal favorite, especially on rainy days. (The compostable toilet, not so much.)

On the second day, we had a break in the rain and from work and ventured out on an urban hike in Downtown Olympia.

Coffee and bostock at Left Bank Pastry.

Murals and signage along the water.

Electrolytes at Northwest Beerwerks.

Local wildlife.

We knew we’d need to be flexible on this journey. Whether it’s an act of weather or you need to take care of business projects, it’s good to follow your gut and take care of ourselves, enjoy a truly unique experience on the bus. Looking forward to the next leg of the trip and to seeing family in Portland.
